It contains more than 30,000 books printed before 1800 as well as a collection of priceless manuscripts dating from the earliest years of European colonization on North, South and Central America. The library was begun about 1840 by John Carter Brown of Providence. After the death of Mr. Brown's son, John Nicholas Brown, in 1900, the library and its endowment became part of Brown University.
