From the printed description on the photograph: "This photo shows the head of navigation (end of navigable waters) on the Providence River about 1900. The steamer in the center foreground is the Richard Borden, which ran between Providence and Fall River, as well as on several Narragansett Bay excursion Routes. The First Baptist Church, left center, the Phillips Lead Building, to the right of the Richard Borden, and the Unitarian Church, upper right, are landmarks that are still standing."
